About the Beaches for Surfing

The regions included in the program have some of the best beaches for surfing in Costa Rica. Some of the most important are:

Caribbean Coast:

Playa Cocles:

Beautiful golden sands, islands offshore and low to medium waves make it an ideal place for beginner surfers. In addition, there are many good restaurants in the surrounding area.

Puerto Viejo

Home of the wave known as “Salsa Brava”, which is the highest and most powerful in all of Costa Rica. This beach is recommended only for expert surfers.

Northern Pacific (Guanacaste):

Playa Naranjo (Santa Rosa National Park):

This solitary area is located within the Santa Rosa National Park, a good place to see local wildlife. It is the site of the famous “Witch’s Rock”, an icon for surfers in Costa Rica.

Playa Potrero Grande (Santa Rosa National Park):

Isolated and difficult to access, this coastline – better known as “Ollie’s Point” – is well worth it, because of its unparalleled characteristics. Its waves were recognized internationally by director Bruce Brown in the 1994 surfing movie: “The endless Summer II”. In addition, the surrounding area offers spectacular biodiversity.

Nicoya Peninsula:

Playa Grande:

Kilometers long, this beach is the nesting site for Leatherback sea turtles at night (Oct – Feb). However, during the day it offers visitors some of the best surf in the area.

Tamarindo:

It is the quintessential beach for surfers, making it the most fashionable place for tourist resorts today. The beach is very broad at low tide, the dream of any couple in love for beach walks. Surfers can enjoy long breaks off the river mouth. Further south, Playa Langosta presents more challenging waves but with less consistency.

Playa Avellanas:

With an increasing number of services catering to surfers, Avellanas also caters to the affluent with the luxurious JW Marriott Resort. The surf breaks here are reef and sandy bottom.

Playa Negra:

Accessed by a dirt road south of Tamarindo, this gray sand beach on a rugged coastline is very popular among surfers looking for thrilling waves.

Santa Teresa & Malpaís:

These beaches on the southern Nicoya Peninsula are some of the most popular in Costa Rica for surfing. They run along a rugged coastline full of surf camps, quirky bars and luxury resorts. There are several recommended surf spots.
